An Australian walkabout was created as a holiday venture based on the Aboriginal rite of passage where Aborigines would undertake a journey in the Australian wildness during adolescence which lasted for as long as six months. In this journey they would retrace their ancestors  “song lines” through the wildness and re-enact their heroic deeds.

Today several tour companies organise walkabouts for tourists in Australia where individuals can take part in survival tactics and experience the Australian wilderness first hand.
